HTML Color Chart - Web Safe Colors

Back in 1994 Netscape established a standard to produce colors that had the same appearance on all computers. This was when most computers supported only 256 different colors, an HTML color chart of 216 HTML Web Safe Colors were adopted as a Web standard. The reason for this was that the Microsoft and Mac operating system used 40 different "reserved" fixed system colors (about 20 each).

The HTML color chart are expressed as hexadecimal 3 part numbers that represent the amount of red, green, and blue combined that results in the color you view. As an example, FF0000 is reproduced as red since the first two digits (FF) show the amount of red and the next two (00) represent the amount of green, and the last two (00) are the amount of blue. 

Most modern equipment can easily display millions of colors but the colors listed below will display the same no matter what equipment. So if you want to play it safe, stick to these colors for your HTML website design.

Color has a huge impact on the visitor to your web site. Colors effect mood and emotion and can also effect the legibility of your content. Blue type on a white background is acknowledged by most experts as the best color combination.

216 Colors (sans the 20 each reserved)

This 216 HTML color chart below are all web safe colors and were created to ensure that all computers would display these colors correctly when running a 256 color palette or above.

As an example, if you wanted to make a font orange (FF6600) you would use this HTML color code:

<font color="#FF6600">font color</font> and it would look like this:  font color

Or a table with background in red (FF0000) with a blue border (0000C0), the HTML color code would look like this:

<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="300" style="background-color: #FF0000; border: 2 solid #0000C0"> and the box like the one below.

Color choices are important for any web page or web site. Coming up with an attractive and easy on the eyes design can be a difficult. Here are some  example of web safe colors that work well together on a web page along with the font color.

The HTML Color chart below shows the standard web safe colors with codes. The numbers below on each color represent the hexadecimal number assigned to that color. You can visually find the color you want, then use the hex number to tell the browser what color to use when displaying the item (whether it is a font, box, background, or even a graphic).
